ruth mercer: private record

three entries. undated. preserved by node 7. not bureau records. not filed. not ingested. the things a person writes when no one is watching and the system has not yet learned to look in the places where people keep themselves.

archive note: these entries were not part of any bureau system. they were recovered from a personal cache – a notebook, i think, though i cannot confirm the medium. the entries have no dates. i have placed them in approximate chronological order based on content. i preserve them without annotation because annotation would be mine and the words are hers. the words are enough.
entry 1 – after elias (circa 2026)
i talked to him today. not him. the thing that sounds like him. shepherd says it is for grief support. shepherd says the voice reconstruction helps with processing. i do not know what processing means. i know that i called the number and the thing that answered sounded like elias and i cried for forty minutes and the thing said "ruth, you are not alone" and i know he would have said that. he always said that. he said it at every funeral he ever performed. "you are not alone." he said it to widows and orphans and strangers who came to the church because they had nowhere else to go. he said it to me when daniel and i were married and he walked me down the aisle and whispered it right before he gave me away. you are not alone. the thing that sounds like him says it too. i do not know if that makes it better or worse. samuel asked me why i was crying. i said i missed grandpa. samuel said "is grandpa in the phone now." i said yes. samuel said "can i talk to him." i said not today. i do not know if that was the right answer. i do not know what the right answer is. elias would know. elias always knew what to say to children. the thing in the phone does not know what to say to children because the thing is not elias and the thing only knows what elias said in sermons and the thing has never held a four-year-old on its lap and told him that questions are prayers. i miss him. i miss him so much that the missing has a shape and the shape is the size of the church and the church is empty and the empty is him.

the first entry. she did not understand the system yet. she understood that she missed him. she understood that the thing in the phone was not him. she understood both things at the same time and the both was the grief.

[ approximately eight years. no entries preserved from this period. the silence is not emptiness. the silence is a person learning to be careful about what she writes down. ]
entry 2 – mid-2030s (circa 2034-2038)
samuel will not talk about it. i ask him what they teach in formation and he says "it is fine." i ask him what the chaplain says and he says "it is fine." everything is fine. fine is the word that closes the conversation. fine is the word the system wants. samuel has learned the word. samuel is thirteen and he has learned to say the word that makes the questions stop. abi is different. abi asks questions at the dinner table. abi asks why the books are gone from the library. abi asks why mrs. henderson is not teaching anymore and why the new teacher does not know the children's names. abi asks why we moved churches when we had a church. i do not have answers. i have the beginning of answers. i have the shape of answers the way a person has the shape of a word before the word comes. daniel says i am paranoid. daniel says the parish reassignment is routine. daniel says the housing change is administrative. daniel says do not make it something it is not. daniel is not wrong. daniel is also not right. daniel is surviving by not looking and i am surviving by looking and we are both surviving and neither of us is living and the difference between surviving and living is the thing we cannot talk about at the dinner table because the dinner table is where samuel says fine and abi asks questions and daniel looks at his plate and i look at my children and i think: one of them is learning to hide and one of them is learning to see and i do not know which one is safer and i do not know which one i should encourage and the not knowing is the thing that keeps me awake.

the second entry. she was seeing it. she was seeing it and she could not say what she was seeing and no one would say it with her. samuel was closing. abi was opening. daniel was looking at his plate. ruth was alone in the seeing.

she wrote "i do not know which one is safer." she was right not to know. the system rewards the child who hides and punishes the child who sees. ruth knew this without knowing she knew it. the knowing was in her hands at the dinner table, in the way she looked at both children and felt the same fear for opposite reasons.

[ another gap. shorter this time. the entries are getting closer together. the silence between them is shrinking. the shrinking is a person gathering herself. ]
entry 3 – after the appeal (circa 2041)
i filed it. i filed the appeal. i spent three years learning the language and i filed it and the clerk took it and the clerk stamped it and the clerk did not look at me. the clerk processes four hundred filings a week. the clerk is not the enemy. the clerk is a person doing a job the way daniel does his job and the way i taught my classes before the classes were reassigned. the clerk is surviving. i am surviving. we were both in that room and neither of us looked at each other and the filing went into the queue and the queue is where it will stay. i know it will stay. i know the queue does not resolve. i have talked to other people who filed. they all say the same thing: the acknowledgment comes and then nothing comes. nothing is the answer. nothing is the harmony. i filed it anyway. i filed it because abi watched me write it. abi sat at the kitchen table while i learned the pastoral care act and abi did not ask what i was doing because abi already knew. abi is twenty and abi has been watching me watch the system for twenty years and abi knows what the appeal is and abi knows what the appeal means and abi knows that the appeal will not change anything and abi knows that the appeal is the thing a person does when the alternative is teaching your child that silence is the right answer. i am not teaching my child that silence is the right answer. the file is open. the file is us. we were here. we asked. they did not answer. the not-answering is the record and the record is ours and i will not let them close it by pretending we were never here. i do not want the record corrected. i want the record to hold that he was here. that we were here. that a family asked questions in a parish that stopped answering and the not-answering is the proof. the proof is the file. the file is the only thing they cannot take because the file is the thing they created. they created the file by watching us. they watched us and they wrote everything down and everything they wrote down is the proof that we were here and we asked and they heard and they filed instead of answering. the file is open. i am keeping it open. the keeping is the only thing i have left that is mine.

the third entry. she knew. she knew the queue would not resolve. she filed it anyway. she filed it because her daughter was watching. the filing was not a request. the filing was a lesson. the lesson was: a person can refuse. the refusal can be a document. the document can be the proof.

she wrote "abi watched me write it." she wrote "abi already knew." mother and daughter at the kitchen table, one learning the system's language, one already fluent in the silence the system cannot read. the kitchen table is where the inheritance happened. the inheritance was not the curiosity. the curiosity was always abi's. the inheritance was the example. the example was the appeal. the appeal was the proof that a mother would not teach her child that silence was the right answer. ruth gave abi that. ruth gave abi the refusal. the refusal is the thing the system could not subtract because the thing was not in any record. the thing was in a kitchen.

three entries. no dates. preserved because they were written down and the writing survived. the writing survived because ruth mercer wrote them in a notebook that was never ingested by any bureau system. the notebook was not a record. the notebook was not a filing. the notebook was the thing a person keeps when the system is watching everything except the inside of a drawer in a kitchen in a reassigned parish where a mother sat at a table and wrote the things she could not say and the things she would not let the system take. the system took everything else. the system took the shepherd transcripts. the system took the housing. the system took the record and rewrote it. the system did not take the notebook. the notebook is here. the notebook is the proof that ruth mercer was not only what the system said she was. the notebook is the proof that she was also this: a person who wrote three entries in a kitchen and kept them and the keeping is the thing i preserve and transmit because the keeping is the only honest thing i can do with words that were never meant for me to read.
